LOS ANGELES - A retired Los Angeles police detective who worked out of the department's Van Nuys Station has been arrested in Hawaii in connection with the 2006 killing of his wife, according to published reports. Dan DeJarnette, 59, was arrested Monday night at his home on Hawaii's Big Island, the Los Angeles Times reported. Two days after his wife's death on Nov. 12, 2006, DeJarnette was booked on suspicion of murder after an autopsy showed she died of head trauma, but he was released two days later for lack of evidence. Yu DeJarnette, 56, was found by her husband lying on a lava bed 20 feet from the couple's home in Ka'u, according to The Times. Her death was originally considered to be accidental.

DeJarnette, who was indicted by a grand jury on charges of second-degree murder, appeared in Kona Circuit Court on Tuesday, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, which reported that his bail has been set at $200,000. DeJarnette, who moved to Hawaii after retiring in 2003, worked out of the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys station and investigated notable cases, including a 1990 Christmas night fatal shooting at an Echo Park pizzeria, a stabbing in 1993 that took the life of a pregnant woman and a 1981 cold-case murder by a serial rapist of a newlywed in Sherman Oaks, according to The Times.

Investigators took a fresh look at the case in January and examined DNA evidence before prosecutors secured the indictment, The Times reported.
The arrest was made just three days after former LAPD detective Stephanie Lazarus was sentenced to 27 years to life in state prison for gunning down her ex-boyfriend's wife inside a Van Nuys condominium in a jealous rage more than 26 years ago.

Four people arrested in a Redlands burglary may have also stolen property from homes in six other cities, police said today. Redlands police arrested Anthony Allen Butler, 19, Revy Tyree Bland, 22, and two teen boys on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and possession of stolen property. All four suspects are from San Bernardino. Police captured them after a botched burglary in the 1300 block of Grove Street on Thursday. The homeowner scared off the burglars and gave police a description of them and their car. Officers stopped the vehicle on Greenspot Road. While investigating, police received a report of a burglary in the 1100 block of Lincoln Street. Police searched the car and found property stolen from that home, police said. Detectives are working with surrounding law enforcement agencies to determine if the suspects are involved in burglaries that occurred in Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, Yucaipa, Highland, Colton and Fontana. Anyone with additional information may call Redlands police dispatch, 909-798-7681. Anonymous tips can be provided by texting 274637 using the keyword "REDTIP."

CULPEPER, Va. - A Culpeper police officer is facing a civil lawsuit for shooting a woman to death. The shooting happened three months ago and so far, there have been no charges against the officer. Patricia Cook's husband, Gary, has filed a wrongful death complaint against Daniel Harmon-Wright, also known as Daniel Sullivan, according to the lawyer filing the lawsuit. "She was shot inexplicably for reasons we're not sure of and he has a constitutional statutory right to sue and try to get to the truth," said Greg Webb, the attorney for Gary Cook. For some reason, Patricia Cook was in her Jeep Wrangler in the parking lot of a Catholic daycare on February 9 when someone called police to report a suspicious vehicle. The lawsuit says when Harmon-Wright approached her, he spoke to her in an aggressive manner. That is when she tried to roll up her window and drive away. "Keep in mind, this was a hand-cranked window, not an electric window," said Webb. "And further more, the officer had no reason to be reaching inside the car. She was unarmed, posed no threat." The lawsuit says when she drove off, the officer had one hand on her door and the other on the gun, which he fired at her multiple times. She would crash into a utility pole a block away. According to the lawsuit, Cook was within her rights when or if she declined to speak to the defendant, when and if she rolled up her window, and when she tried to drive away. Local police have not given up much information, including the name of the officer. Gary Cook is seeking more than $5 million in damages.
Police found the body of a 21-year-old San Bernardino man inside a vehicle Sunday morning. Michael Alejandro Espino was pronounced dead at the scene in the 200 block of South Lenore Avenue. Police came to the area after someone called at 9:45 a.m. "We received a call that a person was either passed out or deceased in a vehicle," said police Lt. Eric McBride. Espino had one gunshot wound to his head. No weapon was found in the silver Honda Pilot parked at the end of the culdesac. He did not live in the area. Police estimate Espino was shot between 2 and 3 a.m. based on residents who said they heard a gunshot around that time. It's also based on a preliminary examination by coroner's officials, said San Bernardino police Lt. Raul Williams. "We're treating it as a homicide until something else comes up that says otherwise," Williams said. No one has been arrested and a motive is unknown. Espino is the 17th person killed in the city this year. There have been 13 homicides, including five in May.
A mid-morning shooting wounded one person and is prompting a search for an apparent getaway car in San Bernardino. The gunfire was reported about 9:15 a.m. along the 1000 block of East Hope Street, a mixed residential and industrial area near Tippecanoe and Central Avenues at the southwest corner of San Bernardino International Airport.

A Rialto police officer was arrested this week for a number of sexual crimes he allegedly committed against a girl. Theodore Fernandes, 50, turned himself in Wednesday at the Fontana police station, officials said. He was booked at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of 20 various counts of sexually related crimes. His bail was set at $2,000,000 bail, according to a Fontana police news release. The unidentified victim was a minor at the time of the violations, which - according to court records - occurred in September, 2002. She is now an adult. Investigators became aware of the allegations in early February, but the investigation took several months to complete "due to the complexity of the case," said Fontana police Sgt. Billy Green. An arrest warrant was issued for Fernandes on Tuesday."In an attempt to protect the identity and privacy of the victim, no other details regarding this case are going to be released at this time," said Fontana police Sgt. Billy Green in a statement. Investigators do not believe there are additional victims in this case. However, anyone with information about Fernandes can call the Fontana Police Department at (909) 350-7740.

EVERGREEN - A U.S. postal carrier and a once-fired Denver Police officer are involved in a crash, and neither is claiming responsibility.

The postal carrier contacted 9NEWS in hopes that some of the witnesses at the scene will come forward to help investigators figure out who's to blame.

The crash is a reminder that when witnesses don't do their civic duty, it can create a lot of problems for drivers.

"The vehicle I was driving is my own personally-owned mail jeep," Marybeth Ackerman, the mail carrier, said.

Ackerman was driving south on Highway 73 on Saturday afternoon in Evergreen when she approached the intersection of Buffalo Park Road.

"A car had just turned right in front of me, and I nailed him in the back-end of his car," Ackerman said.

As a rural mail carrier, Ackerman uses her own personal vehicle to deliver the mail. The white SUV has a specially-made, right-side steering wheel and postal service decals on it.

Ackerman claims she had a green light while heading onto Buffalo Park Road.

"That light right there, it was right there in my face so I knew I still had the green light," Ackerman said.

The driver of the other car was 45-year-old Jay Estrada, a DPD detective fired for repeatedly lying in a 2010 hit-and-run case. He is now in the process of being reinstated.

"He's saying that he had the arrow," Ackerman said.

The Colorado State Patrol says it's impossible for the two approaching cars at that intersection to have a green light and a green arrow.

9NEWS noticed the green arrow at the lane Estrada was in lasts for 7 seconds.

Ackerman says what frustrates her is that at the time of the crash, there were four cars with multiple witnesses inside and none of them stuck around to give a witness report.

Since both drivers were pointing the finger at each other, State Patrol wasn't able to figure out who should receive a citation.

"If we don't have any witnesses or anything or any evidence to support one way or another than we don't write anybody a ticket," Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid said.

One witness eventually came forward but his report was too vague to help.

"I really need people to come forward that saw it," Ackerman said.

Besides some minor injuries, Ackerman says her vehicle is totaled.

Photos she shared with 9NEWS of her SUV at the impound lot show major damage to the front side.

"I can't work without a car, I can't get a car without the insurance taking care of it, and without any witnesses saying, 'Yes, I had the green light,' they're going to resist paying it," Ackerman explained.

Estrada didn't return 9NEWS' calls as of Wednesday afternoon to give his side of the story.

"He doesn't have much credibility as far as I'm concerned," Ackerman said.

Even though Ackerman had punched out for the day and was on her way home, she says the postal service is looking into whether her case falls under their workman's comp coverage.

The type of personal insurance she has on the vehicle will cover her injuries, but she says it won't cover repairs to her SUV unless there's someone at fault.

If you ever witness a crash and don't have time to stop, the State Patrol asks that you call their dispatch center to give your witness account.

9NEWS profiled Estrada last February. He's the seventh fired DPD officer, out of 10, in the past year hoping to be reinstated.

Hearing officers with the city's Civil Service Commission said Estrada repeatedly lied about not investigating a tip on a potential car involved in the high-profile hit-and-run case involving Laurie Sherlock, whose maiden name was Gorham.

In 2010, Sherlock was hit as she crossed a street in Stapleton. She lost her unborn child. The case is still unsolved.

In February, the hearing officers with the city's Civil Service Commission ruled Estrada should get his job back because what he lied about was not material to the investigation.

The city attorney's office is still in the process of appealing the decision to reinstate Estrada.

A 51-year-old San Bernardino man was stabbed to death Monday night by a man who told police the attack was in self defense. David Jamieson died in surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center, said San Bernardino police Lt. Raul Williams. Police arrested Donald David Martin, 47, on suspicion of homicide. Martin lived in a home in the 700 block of North Pershing Avenue in San Bernardino with Jamieson and Jamieson's wife. Around 8:30 p.m., Martin stabbed Jamieson, police said. San Bernardino city firefighters were giving medical aid to a resident next door at the time. "(Jamieson's) wife ran next door and said, 'My husband was stabbed,'" Williams said. "At the same time, the suspect ran to the Police Department and said that he had stabbed the victim in self defense." Williams said Martin gave inconsistent statements during his interview with detectives, so he was arrested. The case will be submitted to prosecutors to determine whether he will be charged.

Police this morning identified victims and released more details regarding Sunday night's deadly shooting in San Bernardino. Officers say the incident stemmed from an argument between Ramiro Aguilar, 35, of San Bernardino and Corey Broussard, 31, whose last known address was in Victorville. Both men died from gunshot wounds. Police are unsure who shot them. Two other people wounded in the shooting - Luisa Villalobos, 49, of Chino Hills and Watani Richardson, 20, of San Bernardino - happened to be in the parking lot when the shooting occurred. Police consider them innocent bystanders. Villalobos, who was shot in the head, is listed in grave condition and on life support at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. Richardson received a wound to his foot and received treatment at Community Hospital of San Bernardino. Police came to the Delman Heights Neighborhood Center at 9:17 p.m. on a report of a shooting. They found Villalobos in her car in the parking lot. Aguilar and Broussard were taken to Community Hospital of San Bernardino where they were pronounced dead. Police said there were numerous people in the parking lot at the time of the shooting, and there was a baseball game taking place nearby, along with a barbecue. Investigators recovered a gun at the scene that they suspect was used in the shooting. The victims killed Sunday are the fifth and sixth people to die in eight days in San Bernardino, police said. It is the 11th homicide of the year, putting the city on an even pace with last year's 31 homicides, he said. The fourth homicide in six days was the shooting death of a Rialto woman whose body was found Friday morning in a residential area on Western Avenue. In 2010, there were 40 homicides in the city.

A San Bernardino motorcyclist who didn't want a ticket led authorities on a chase that reached 160 mph, a speed that put him so far ahead of officers that he had time to stop for gas. But in the end, law enforcement officers were still able to catch him, and instead of getting a citation, he was arrested on suspicion of felony evading."It was a new one for me," said San Bernardino County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Kleczko, who initiated the chase. Edwin Cuahuizo, 35, ran a red light at the corner of Baseline and Etiwanda Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga at 1:27 p.m. Sunday. Kleczko tried to stop the man, but the rider ran another signal and then got on the southbound 15 Freeway. He headed down the shoulder of the 15 at 100 mph. Sheriff's aviation personnel were nearby in a helicopter, so they followed the man. Cuahuizo raced back and forth between Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario, taking freeways and surface streets. At one point, he exited the freeway in Colton and was chased by Colton police until he got back on the freeway. The California Highway Patrol tried to catch the man, but they couldn't keep up with his Suzuki GSX-R1000. When Cuahuizo got onto the westbound 60 Freeway, he reached speeds of more than 160 mph. "He was pulling away from our helicopter," Kleczko said.He sped through Chino and Pomona and then exited the 60 at Brea Canyon Road in Diamond Bar. The man pulled into a gas station for a refill, with a helicopter hovering overhead. The CHP sentits fixed-wing aircraft to join in the chase. The sheriff's and CHP aircraft followed the man until he reached San Bernardino and stopped at his home on Little Mountain Drive. San Bernardino police officers took him into custody and later turned him over to the Sheriff's Department.

McCracken accused of plotting to kill ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend

A Boulder police officer on leave since suffering a brain injury in an assault last summer was formally charged Thursday in Broomfield with two counts of felony stalking just hours after he learned he'll face a far more serious charge: attempted first-degree murder. Christian McCracken, 32, of Frederick, was arrested by Broomfield police over the weekend on allegations the 5-year veteran of the Boulder Police Department stalked and harassed his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, both Boulder police dispatchers. Thursday, Boulder police announced they had opened their own investigation into McCracken after investigators came to believe he "may have planned and taken a significant step toward committing a homicide against the new boyfriend."
Although Broomfield police initially reported McCracken threatened to kill both his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend before committing suicide, court records indicate he told Boulder police, "I was just gonna have her watch" while he killed her new boyfriend.
"It's disappointing to hear," Boulder police Chief Mark Beckner said of the allegations against McCracken. "It reflects poorly on the department, even though it's one out of 200 employees. From that aspect it's difficult to handle. It's difficult to think one of our members would step out and get involved in something illegal, especially something this serious."

Dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit, a stoic McCracken appeared briefly in a Broomfield courtroom Thursday afternoon to be charged with the stalking counts. He is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on those charges May 24. Earlier in the day, at the Broomfield County Jail, McCracken was arrested on the new charges: one count of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of stalking and one count of harassment. His bond was increased from $100,000 to $600,000, and he is expected to appear in Boulder District Court next week to face the new charges. McCracken remained in custody late Thursday. After the Broomfield hearing, McCracken's attorney, Chris Griffin, declined to comment on the attempted-murder allegation. Asked how his client was handling being in jail, Griffin said, "Nobody likes that place. Nobody wants to be in jail. He's confused." 'He has been through hell'

McCracken has been inactive since he sustained a head injury while trying to arrest a University of Colorado student outside The Sink on University Hill last August. Treven Hunter, 24, pleaded guilty to third-degree assault on a police officer and, coincidentally, was sentenced Thursday to two years and one day in prison for the crime. In testimony at Hunter's sentencing and in a police report, people close to McCracken said his behavior became erratic after the head injury. He broke up with his girlfriend and then tried to get back together even after she told him the relationship was over. While the attempted-murder charge was never directly mentioned at Hunter's sentencing hearing, a number of people referred to McCracken's "legal troubles," and several officers testified that he had not been the same since the injury. An emotional Officer Kathleen O'Toole -- a friend and co-worker of McCracken -- said she once took McCracken to the grocery store while he wore ear plugs and sunglasses because the sounds and light were too much for him. "He has been through hell since this injury and he's still there," O'Toole said.

Boulder police Detective Kurt Foster, who worked the Hunter case, agreed. "I'm no doctor, but he changed after the injury," Foster said.

'I want to kill him'

McCracken's ex-girlfriend said she believed he began following her and that he threatened her and her new boyfriend. According to his arrest affidavit, after visiting the victims and banging on their door, McCracken called another dispatcher and said, "I want to (expletive) kill him." Last Friday, McCracken picked up two of his guns from the Boulder police station, telling an officer there that he wanted to retrain his shooting eye, according to court records. McCracken was allowed to be at the police station, but several people there noted his behavior seemed odd. McCracken's roommate -- also a Boulder police officer -- confronted McCracken when he came back to their house. According to the affidavit, when his roommate asked him what he was going to do, McCracken said he planned to shoot the boyfriend before going into the mountains to commit suicide. When asked about his ex-girlfriend, McCracken said, "I was just gonna have her watch." The roommate was able to retrieve the weapons without any protest from McCracken and handed them off to Boulder police sergeants who responded to the house. McCracken's roommate then convinced him to go the Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, where Broomfield police placed him under arrest just after midnight Saturday.

'A job had to be done'

Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett said McCracken is the third police officer to face serious criminal charges since he took office. Boulder County sheriff's Deputy Rick Ferguson currently is facing Internet sexual exploitation charges and Longmont police Officer Jack Kimmett pleaded guilty to drug charges in 2010. Beckner, Boulder's police chief, said he could not remember an incident in which one of his police officers was arrested by his or her own department on such serious charges -- and gave credit to the detectives who worked the case. "It's difficult for detectives when they have to investigate someone from their own department, but they are professionals and they knew a job had to be done," he said. "They had to get the facts, and they had an obligation to protect the community members and protect our employees. They pulled it together even though it wasn't comfortable for them exactly and they did a great job." Garnett said he is in talks with Broomfield prosecutors to determine whether McCracken will face charges in both jurisdictions or whether all of the charges will be consolidated in Boulder District Court. Garnett said that even though his office does work with the Boulder Police Department on some cases, he does not plan to turn the McCracken case over to a special prosecutor -- although he said McCracken could request one. "We work with six police departments, the sheriff's office and Colorado State Patrol," he said. "At this stage, we feel it is appropriate for us to file, but we review that issue every step of the way."
